Relief for consumers; Farmers demand lifting of export ban on onions

On Monday, there was a sudden downfall in the prices of onions from Rs 35 to Rs 40 a Kilo to Rs 13 to Rs 15 a kilo.

Now common man can treat with onions as prices of onions have came down in the comfortable zone.

India’s largest wholesale market of onions at Lasalgaon in Nashik has witnessed decline in the prices of onions.

The Lasalgaon Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) wholesale market opened with an onion prices as Rs 2000 to Rs 2400 per quintal.

Earlier government has stopped exporting onions till January 15 due to its shortage but is still continuing with this ban as onion prices are roaming around Rs 40 per kg across the country.

However, it is very difficult for the government to initiate export of onions as it could create fresh shortage of onions in the domestic market, taking the prices high again.

Although fresh crop has reached the market but still it may not meet the growing demand.

Mahadev Raut, a trader from Vashi APMC said that different qualities of onions are coming in the market. Some of them coming from Nasik, Ahmednagar and other states like Gujarat, along with imports from Pakistan. So there is a possibility that prices would crash further.

Now, the major problem is lack of government control over the supply chain of onion traders. At this time, government need to ensure that downfall in wholesale prices should be reflected in the retail prices also.
