Mobile Tariffs May Go Up
There has been a major shift in policy that may make the mobile telecom service costly. According to Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal the operators can hike the charges for the present and the extended spectrum.
Delinking spectrum from the licences in the aftermath of the 2G scam, Sibal said, “In future, the spectrum will not be bundled with licence. The licence to be issued to telecom operators will be in the nature of ‘Unified Licence’ and the licence holder will be free to offer any of the multifarious telecom services.
The license holder can offer any services including the wireless services. The license will be obtained through the market driven procedure.
The telecom operators as of now got the license bundled with spectrum. This has caused a price war among the telecom operators.
But in the coming days the operator will have to pay the market price for the additional 1.8 MHz spectrum of the 2G category.
For the regular and old mobile operator like Bharti, Vodafone and idea, who are holding a 6.2 MHz spectrum have to pay for the airwaves.
This will make their operational costs high and the tariffs are likely to increase. According to Mr. Sibal, these changes will be implemented within immediate effect.
The old mobile operators are allowed to retain their 6.2 MHz spectrum but the new operator will have to pay for additional 1.8 MHz spectrum.
